Toyota Corolla AE86 fans will probably be excited with this news. This has been brewing for quite some time and hearing some word about it had me split and confused. As previously reported, the Toyota and Subaru are creating an entry-level sports car and reports indicate that this same car underdevelopment is the one that’s supposed to replace the 86.
The AE86 has had been a cult fan for stock circuit and rally fans. Street racers have also taken a liking on the old 86 as it was a superb-handling RWD and the stock 4A-GE proved ample enough for downhill races. Blame that manga and anime Initial D for making the Corolla Trueno Sprinter/Levin/GT-S quite popular.
Being a Toyota fan, myself, I admired the AE86 as the ultimate stock sports car underdog. But with the news of a new one being built make me think twice about the whole idea. And it’s not like with the DeLorean where the new DeLoreans would still be built with the old look in mind. It’s quite different with the AE86. Just take a look at the sleeker shape that the concept has.
You see, the novelty of the AE86 is that even if it’s more than 20 years old, it’s still quite a damned good car. Much like the old VW Golf GTi in my book. Building a new one with all the new modifications and ideas would rob the novelty out of it. The new VW Beetle was a travesty of justice in my opinion. While I am all excited for the Toyota-Subaru team up, I do have my reservations for dubbing it the AE86 replacement.
