Hi again! Fresh off the weekend and hot off another Top Gear episode. Top Gear season’s heating up and it’s episode 5 for all of us petrolheads. You got to love the Brits for creating this show, folks. You just got to love them. Anyway, on to the weekly bollocks.
First up, they finally take a closer look on the Nissan GT-R. After having it win versus the bullet train in last’s episode, they now take the unrestrained car out on to the track (not the Top Gear track though, it was done on the Fuji racing circuit). Remember that the car automatically detects if you’re on a track via satnav and that disables the speed limiter off. Clarkson’s take? On the cornering: “It feels fan-bleeding-tastic.” On standards: “They haven’t built a car here, they built a new yardstick.” Oh and before Jeremy finished his review, he damn well hurt his neck.
And the best news, The Stig took it out on the TG track. And the lap time we’ve all been waiting for —> 1:19.7!!! That number beats the SLR, the 911 Carrera… Too bad they didn’t sensationalize it even more. I guess last week was enough.
Next up, some in-studio reviews with the Renault Magan Coupe Concept that operates using a mobile phone. There’s also the Peugeot 308 RC Z that they considered something more exciting than the VW Scirroco they featured last time. For the news, they also featured the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black. They also had a little debate on which automaker doesn’t make ugly cars. Citroen (from May). No. Alfa. No. Aston. No. Hummer (from the audience, WTF?!?). Vauxhall (from Jeremy)… Hmm… Agila was brought into question.
Oh, and there’s a bit on how the government’s sentiment of not being able to use cars is “Chapter 1 in left-wing dictatorship handbook.” In summary, you have Gordon Brown’s (superimposed as Stalin) portrait right here. The Dacia Sandero will have electronic brake distribution. And they also praised this guy who got rid of all the speed cameras in some place in England. No takes on stupid signs this week which is a nice breather.
No epic race and no cheap car challenge but they have a challenge between Jeremy and James. James had his 1972 Rolls Royce Corniche. Jeremy had his Mercedes-Benz 600. Quite hilarious having two aging blokes jabbing at each other’s “classic” cars. The challenges - a cone slalom vs a Hyundai i10 driven by the Stig, a 1/4 mile push race, a top speed run measured via radar gun, parking at the center of London, famous former owners.
For the stars in the reasonably priced car they featured Peter Jones and Theo Paphitis from the Dragons’ Den. Peter Jones nearly beat Gordon Ramsay, pretty impressive.
They also featured a new sport combining green laning and hunting a fox-pee drenched Daihatsu Terios (with Clarkson) in the countryside with a Hamster on a horse with hounds. Needless to say, they totally destroyed a countryside.
