Philippine President Gloria Arroyo has ordered the crushing of smuggled exotics - Lambos, Ferraris, Porsches and other cars. The total value for the exotics are pegged at USD 2.2 M. And she wants it done in nationwide TV to send a message to crooks all over that smuggling will not be tolerated.
In a country where a lot of people have been living on less than a couple of dollars (US) a day, crushing smuggled exotics seem to be an extreme measure. How about placing those nabbed smuggled items in an auction and using the earnings to fund education and health care? Now that would seem to be a more plausible choice.
Previous suggestions to what to do with them do include auctioning them to local film outfits. A change of pace perhaps for a country who’s automobile market remains to be a Japanese domain.
I know Jeremy Clarkson’s fond of crushing the cars that he hates on a whim. Maybe President Arroyo got the idea from watching too much Top Gear. Haha. You think?
