Pontiac G8 Sport TruckIf it weren’t for My Name is Earl, I would’ve dismissed the El Camino as something that’s going to be relegated into a cult following for the low-riding community. Thanks to the show, a lot of people might be thinking of the name as the ultimate hick ride. Probably why GM is still deliberating what they’d call the Pontiac G8 Sport Truck. Undeniably, it’s still El Camino-esque.

Right now, GM is considering creating a V6 version for the 2010 Pontiac G8 Sport Truck. The planned standard spec involves a massive 6.0L V8 engine capable of dishing out 361 hp. But since GM’s oil-induced woes have hit the company hard, they are now considering slapping on a 3.2L V6 dishing out a still-respectable 265 hp.

While part of me would want this cult-classic revival to make it to the market, I’m beginning to expect how stingy GM will be in reconfiguring their development and production plans. The preference for smaller displacement engines reflects GM’s desire to cater to the fuel-economic concerns. But will this be enough to sway the market in its favor? The trend shows that even hopes shouldn’t be as optimistic.
