With this latest move by BMW, I think the world of luxury motoring has really turned a page. BMW’s flagship series – the 7 Series – is set to get a hybrid version to be available at the end of 2009 to cater to the growing green market. In addition to the 7 Series the new X6 SUV will also get a conjoined electric motor as well.
The 7 series is set to be a “mild hybrid” which would incorporate a start-stop system along with the capability to shut down the engine when coasting or braking. The rest of the car’s electronic systems will be handled by the electric motor. The 7 Series Concept packs a 4.4L twin-turbo 400-hp V8 that is paired with a 20 hp motor.
The X6 SUV, however, will get a full hybrid treatment meaning the car will be able to run either on the electric alone or cycled with the internal combustion engine. The X6 is likely to get the same V8 found in the 7 Series.

It’s quite interesting how far automakers have gone to market their models. For example, MPVs/people carriers cater to families, SUVs for soccer moms and the outdoorsy people, trucks for those all-purpose toughie jobs, luxuries for business people, etc…
Now we have cars built and marketed as SAVs – sports activity vehicles. They’re cars built to exude the sportiness and elegance of the corporate-slash-weekend warrior types. And that’s exactly how BMW design their Concept X6. Sleek, sporty, and elegant at the same time, mashing together the sportiness of a coupe with the characteristics of the BMW X series.
Specs aren’t readily available for this one. The engine bay however, cradles a BMW ActiveHybrid. As far as performance goes, BMW promises that the X6 grips the road like no other. It promises the on and off road performance of the X series in the shell of a sleek and elegant designs of coupes. Now this vehicle and the SAV concept intrigues me honestly since this definitely fills in the gray area between coupes and crossovers.
