Sure there’s a strong argument saying that British automaking is dead but thanks to the still-existent smaller car companies, there just might be a glint of hope for them. Axon Automotive is a British car manufacturer based in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire and they recently just launched a new eco-car that gets and amazing 80(US)/100(imp) mpg.

In today’s world where squeezing out more miles to the gallon is the name of the game, Axon probably has a contender in their hands. The compact car combines weight reduction (achieved through a carbon fiber body) and dynamics (uses a gas engine with infinitely variable transmission) to achieve improved mileage and emissions.

You just can’t expect much oomph from this small car as it only gets up to 90 mph. But for city driving and 80 mpg, you probably can forgive everything else that this car lacks. The car is expected to be available in 2010.
