Audi A4Not everything in Frankfurt will be automotive pornography. Audi even in its home country will be showcasing fuel-efficient versions of the Audi A4 and A3.

These aren’t really new developments, they’re just clever use of what they already have in their parts bins and make their existing cars better.

For the A4, they took the 3.0L TDI from the Q7 and crammed it into the A4’s engine bay. Mated to a 6-speed triptronic and quattro system, the A4 now gets 35 mpg and 0 to 62 comes in a not too shabby 6.2 seconds.

The new A3 will get a turbocharged 1.2 TFSI 4-cycliner engine. The engine generates 105 hp and a max torque of 129 lb-ft. While these don’t really get you anywhere (0 to 62 mph comes in 11.1 seconds), you can probably deal with its slowness with a 43 mpg rating.

If you think that alternative fuels are only for pencil-necked faux-hippies who can quote figures how much carbon footprint your side-draft carbs leave behind, think again. Well, this modified Audi A4 was able to breach the 200 mph speed barrier while running on bio-gas. That that, high-octane gasoline!

This A4 effectively made history by being the fastest bio-gas car in the world. The team used a mixture of methane and other gases obtained from the decomposition of grass clippings and sawdust to power a 585 hp overbored 3.0L twin-turbo engine.

Organized by TÜV Rhineland, the run was out to prove that bio-gas is indeed an alternative to fossil fuels. The record was set on a German test track.

Audi A4As an effort to continue improving their product line, Audi has put a new 1.8 TFSI engine for the two cars – the A4 and the A5. Mated with the A4’s manual, it can dish out a decent 120hp. But with the A5’s multitronic tranny, it generates as much as 170hp.

The A4’s offerings round up to make the car a decent sedan, particularly efficient at that. Combined with a turbo and direct injection, a manual six-speed and front wheel drive, the A4 with the 1.8 TFSI can go from 0 to 62 in 10.5 seconds and can run up to speeds of 129 mph. As for fuel efficiency, it can go up to 33.13 mpg.

The A5 with the 1.8 TFSI gets some high-revs and can sprint from 0 to 62 in 8.6 seconds and can reach 135 mph. With the variable automatic multitronic tranny, it offers driving ease with a relatively low fuel consumption getting around 32-ish mpg.

With these upgrades, Audi creates good choices for consumers in terms of badge and performance. The A4 and the A5 ship out at €25,900 and €34,900 MSRPs respectively. But for those prices? Hmm… Seems like a bit too stiff for the common driver.
